I did not fall in love.

Kinja'd!!!

The transmission tended to ignore my throttle input for too long, then suddenly respond with adouble down shift that was uncalled for. It does have crazy highway range though, allowing me to get nearly 500 miles between fillups.

It was also quite creaky, but then again, it’s a work van with benches bolted into it.

All in all, 5/10

For all intents and purposes, this was a 1995 design, there was only one facelift and stayed the same ever since.

I’ve had problems like this a time or two with automatic transmissions..  some a definitely more dimwitted than others..

I drove one of those 20 years ago when they were new(er) down the PA turnpike in the rain. That's a scary drive in something that light in the rear end with that much body roll

In the future, try letting off the throttle momentarily then stab it, that will usually force a downshift (down one gear for stabbing halfway, down two for full throttle).

That looks new enough to have the 6 speed auto, probably with a 4.8L V8.  My dad has essentially the same van, but cargo version (no windows). His shifted poorly like OP was describing until I finally convinced him to reset the computer(s). Now it drives much better. These modern autos are supposed to "learn" the drivers style but it seems GM transmissions are slow learners.

It does not conventional h oon. However, with an empty back, and a few helpful splashes of rain, I’m certain it would loop-the-loop with ease. God forbid you hit a dry spot though.

But seriously: how hard did you try to make it hoon?

Not at all, as it was perpetually full of engineers who's healthcare I'm footing the bill for. So the risk taking was low.

For everything that reply doesn’t say, it says quite a lot. I’d have waited until the engineers were all in the bar, then gone out and at least determined whether the rear diff was open or not.
